Good to know in Costa Adeje

Sunset over the sea

The coast faces west, so the sun sets straight into the Atlantic, often with La Gomera on the horizon. The promenade above Playa del Duque and the seafront at La Caleta are two of the best spots. Arrive 30 minutes early for the golden light.

The weather changes with height

The beaches are usually sunnier and warmer than Adeje town, which sits higher up the hill and often has more cloud. Now and then calima, a hazy dust from Africa, turns the sky yellow for a few days.

Whales all year round

A resident group of pilot whales lives between Tenerife and La Gomera, and dolphins are common too. That makes whale watching possible in every season. Morning trips often have calmer seas.

What most visitors miss

La Caleta

The old fishing village

At the quiet northern end of the resort, La Caleta still has the feel of a small harbour. Walk there along the promenade in the late afternoon and stay for fresh fish by the water as the sun goes down.

Wild beach

Playa de Diego Hernández

No road, no sunbeds, no shops. A rough coastal path from the edge of La Caleta leads to one of the last unspoilt coves on this coast. Wear proper shoes, take water and shade. Clothing optional.

Adeje town

The historic centre up the hill

A few kilometres inland, the old town has the church of Santa Úrsula, the 16th-century Casa Fuerte and local bars where prices feel very different from the coast. It is often a few degrees cooler too.

Callao Salvaje

A quieter sunset

West of La Caleta, Callao Salvaje and Playa Paraíso sit higher above the sea. The views over the Atlantic to La Gomera are wide, and the evenings are calm compared with the busy promenade.

On foot

The whole coast is walkable

The seafront promenade links La Caleta, El Duque, Fañabé, Torviscas and Puerto Colón. It is flat and lit at night, so you can leave the car and walk from beach to beach.

Weather tip

Cloud up the hill, sun on the beach

When it looks grey from your balcony in the hills, the coast is often bright. Check the area buttons in the weather box above before you change your plans.
